Reynolds Letters: Final Website!

Kate, Harrah, Aiden, Hope, May, Megan

As you all know, our project aimed to document and digitize the journey of Mary Reynolds, a Carleton alum who graduated in 1904. Mary’s letters have never before been digitized, transcribed, or publicly displayed. Mary was selected by the Minister of China in Washington (Liáng Chéng 梁誠, 1864-1917), to personally tutor the nephews of the Empress Dowager Cixi (慈禧太后, 1801-1908). She traveled to Beijing, China alone and wrote a series of letters detailing her experience between 1904 and 1906. This collection was housed at the Carleton College archives, and includes letters to Carleton president Strong, to the Carleton Mission Board, and to a certain Miss Evans.
