Rest is one of the things I am most conscious about. If I am in a space for long enough, I will nap there. That is one of the laws I live my life by. So when it came to personalizing my Carleton map for this project, I knew what must be done.
I wanted my map to mirror the humorous nature of the subject matter, so I used the color pencil map theme. Additionally, I made sure to create polygon layers of each building and created pop ups with their respective names and descriptions. I utilized a thick red line to map my conceivable trajectory if I were to ever go on a nap odyssey. Uploading my csv took some work in order to actually get the points to show up, but with determination I was eventually successful.
Then, I created a storymap to accompany my map! Because I work as a Digital Humanities Associate, I know exactly how powerful storymaps can be as an educational tool. Storymaps allow humanities to tie directly with the space around us. In scenarios where it is important to acknowledge and communicate a sense of place, arcgis is unparalleled. Having students directly engage with where on the map they are writing/thinking about gives them a higher connection to their work.
Mapping is one of the most identifiable mediums in Digital Humanities, and it is because it integrates technology that communicates accessible information – which is exactly what Digital Humanities aims to do.

Aidan, I love your post! I think you did a really nice job in the ArcGIS software, especially thinking about what would and would not be appropriate for such a map. The detail that you used the colored pencil theme is a great example. I also think that your personality comes through so well in this post which can be a hard thing to nail in a sort of academic blog post-I think it’s great. Keep napping, Aidan!
Hi Aiden, I really like your approach to this assignment. Your choice of base map suits the map’s purpose perfectly, and your map shows how digital mapping can convey not just information but an engaging narrative or story. As you noted, its interactive features make it a powerful educational tool and have wide applications for digital humanities.
Aiden, I thought your map was very well thought out, and successfully conveyed your point very well. I also really liked the inclusion of a StoryMap, as I think that it highlights each individual building! Tools like StoryMaps are part of why I think ArcGIS is such a powerful platform for digital humanists – oftentimes humanities data includes spacial references, and ArcGIS allows for the creation of map-based narratives to effectively communicate this information.
I really like your interpretation of the prompt. It is a creative, unique, and funny way to map Carleton. The colored pencil theme was a fun addition that enhanced the concept. I liked how you utilized the storymap feature to create a narrative and used not just polygons, but points and lines as well. Also, I can relate to not getting all the csv points to show up right away. That was the biggest obstacle I had to overcome in the entirety of the mapping process. Overall, what can I say other than great job!
I just want to say that this blew my expectations of what to expect on this sort of project. The red line makes it very clear the type of narrative you are trying to tell before I even read through it, which I think is good! It’s cool how clicking into the points gives you more information on that specific location. I think if someone is looking at a lot of maps, this one would surely stick in their mind!
Aiden! I enjoyed this concept because you have demonstrated a relationship between buildings on campus that I would not have otherwise associated together! I wonder if perhaps images of the spaces within the aforementioned buildings may further your descriptions of the spaces themselves. Also, is this perhaps an argument for the best nap spaces on campus? How, visually and spatially, would you approach this?
Hey Aidan,
This post is hilarious and creative, you definitely made a unique take on the assignment and is very well writen. I can’t say I’ve ever napped in West Gym or Dacie Moses house but I feel like Dacie Moses would be super cozy. Your map is also layed out well and easy to follow!
Wow! How did you get it to actually embed? I still can’t figure that out on my map. I also thought your colors are very well picked, they are calming to the eyes. I don’t know if you did that intentionally given its a nap map, but regardless I thought it was a great addition.
