Experience & Possibilities
This is the link to my personal website. I chose a clean theme, made a few layout tweaks, wrote a short intro, and added my contact information. I added some custom CSS to change the color and style of my fonts. I really enjoyed the process of building and experimenting with the design, and I think this platform has a lot of potential. Currently, there is an introduction page and a blog section with no posts yet, but I can definitely upload more materials to this section. I am also planning sections for research and projects so I can showcase what I have learned and am currently working on. The goal is to make it easy and enjoyable to explore different kinds of content in one place. Thus, the platform’s biggest strength, in my view, is its ability to showcase and organize content: with thoughtful layout and structure, information from different sources can be presented clearly and cohesively. Beyond personal blogging, I think this site has the potential to support digital exhibitions, whether it is for museums or libraries, by presenting materials in an engaging and well-curated format.
Pros & Cons
There are benefits and drawbacks associated with personal sites. First, design takes more time. Building a site means thinking through how to present information, which requires a person to design the layout, navigation, and structure of the site. Whereas social apps provide you with a fixed interface on which you can just post the information. Second, reach and access are different. A website usually needs a direct link or for people to know the URL, so it is not as instantly discoverable as social feeds.
That said, the “drawbacks” come with real benefits. The extra effort provides you with more creative control. You can shape your site to feel more engaging. In addition, a smaller, more intentional audience often leads to better connections and resonance with the content. In that sense, a personal website can be a stronger way to share specific information with a targeted audience than other communication channels.
Your analysis of the pros and cons of building a personal website is very clear and aligns closely with my own thoughts. I especially liked how you highlighted the trade-offs between different digital platforms. Your reflection reinforces my view that the choice between a personal website and social media depends largely on purpose. I also agree that websites offer a way to share targeted, high-quality content in a controlled and meaningful way, giving creators more agency over how their work is presented and experienced.
