Final Project Source Documentation

Source 1: Carleton College Digital Collections, Postcard Collections

We plan to utilize the Carleton College Digital Collections to help us gather photos of buildings, including the dates they were taken and the locations of the buildings in Carleton College’s postcard collections. In addition, the Carleton’s Digital Collections site offers other important information regarding the postcard, such as a short description, which we believe is very valuable in bringing context to a viewer and helping us in accurately portraying Carleton College.

The format of this source will be in Postcards. However, the format that it will need to be in will be images. Because the Digital Collections have already provided us with images of the front and back of the postcards, we do not need to take pictures in order to get an image of the postcard.

Additionally, as we are taking these images from Carleton College’s Digital Collections, all of the images are owned by the Carleton College Archives. However, the postcard collection is open-access because the introduction to the collection provided us with this information. Due to this, we are allowed to use these materials for our work since it is a part of our research about Carleton College. Additionally, if we were to have other concerns, within each postcard in the postcard collection, there is a small description about the rights management and a link to the terms and conditions.

Lastly, when thinking about the privacy and ethics of this source, we have decided to only view buildings and landscapes in the picture of the postcard instead of the backside of the postcard, which could have a personal message on it. From this decision, we are considerate of the identity of the original owners of the postcard.

From this, we have created a Google Drive of the photos we have collected. This Google Drive will continue to store our progress for this final project, as well as document any additional sources we use.

Source 2: Imagined Futures, Forgotten Pasts

This source is an online project for the student-curated exhibition that traces Carleton’s architectural history and evolution. This source is crucial for us to understand and contextualize our findings because the timeline shows all of Carleton’s buildings in chronological order. Also, we can use it to learn more specifically about certain buildings we have images on, like Williams Hall. Due to this project, I know it was demolished and replaced with Olin Hall. Additionally, this source can provide inspiration and insight on how to make an effective WordPress website and interactive timeline.

It is formatted as an interactive timeline and webpage. To use this source, we will use it fairly by quoting with credit and providing a proper citation with a URL and other metadata.

The material in this source is owned by the Carleton College Archives because that is where the images and data are drawn from. The Carleton College Archives encourage open use and distribution of their materials for educational purposes, so we are free to use this source and any of our other images.

This timeline depicts buildings and stories of the campus throughout Carleton’s history. Our focus is on the buildings, so we won’t mention any individuals. We will also protect the identity of the original authors of the project.

  1. We are also a group using the Carleton Archies as our primary source of analysis, except that we are examining physical objects rather than photographs. Finding that timeline is great. We are struggling to find more specific information about our items, many of them having a large date range (1900s-2000s).
