Reflection

I believe the hardest thing about my process of modeling my house was the immense number of possibilities available in Fusion 360. Essentially, there was no endpoint. I realized that there was also more I could do to make my model better and more realistic. There are so many tools at my disposal. I realized that at some point, I had to just accept what I had accomplished. Alternatively, as I learned a function within Fusion 360, I felt that I learned a skill that I can continue to build on. I think I understand many of the basic tools available which I am excited about. Once I felt comfortable with basic tools, the basic modeling was pretty easy. I just felt that advancing my skills to the next level will be the harder part, and was what bogged me down. The compromise I made was to accept that the building of skills within modeling will come as a process. I felt like I needed to learn everything about the system on the first day, but I eventually accepted that I will learn it step by step.

I have realized that 3D modeling can be utilized in a plethora of ways within research and teaching. In all honesty, I feel slightly overwhelmed by the possibilities, so I will focus on one specific aspect. My father is a history professor. Though he taught at a college for 20 years, he is now a high school history teacher. He often asks me how I think he can get his students more engaged and excited about learning history. I think advanced 3D modeling could make history so much more interesting. We could rebuild complex events and settings in history, we could analyze important items, we could do so much. I think actively seeing history come to life will help students understand history to a deeper level and benefit the academic landscape as a whole.

My Tip: Constructing an Offset Plane

Creating offset planes helped me significantly in modeling my house. It allows you to make a new plane at a specific location that you can then continue to build on or connect with other planes.

  1. This looks amazing Dylan! Everything looks very realistic. I love how in depth you went with the material on the front door and door knob. The indentation creating the frames for each of the window sills is a great touch as well. I was also curious as to what the box is on top of the garage?

  2. Your house looks great! I can tell you put a lot of attention into the details. I like the idea of connecting 3D modeling to teaching history. Rebuilding events and settings so students can actively see history come to life is a really intriguing example of how modeling can reach beyond design and have a real impact in education.
