My Failed Attempt to Model the Weitz

For this week’s lab, I was burdened with the task of attempting to 3D Model the Weitz Center for Creativity.

I’ve had the pleasure of going to the Weitz Center for a variety of classes, such as Cinema and Media Studies, guitar lessons, and political science courses. Carleton describes the building as a laboratory for creativity, performance, and enhancement of students’ learning experience.

Now for my Model… well, here’s the problem I faced: the Weitz Center is so ginormous that it was difficult to acquire photos wide enough that also connected well. When I initially created my folder of images and uploaded them to MetashapePro, none of the images actually aligned. I attempted to watch a few YouTube videos on how to fix this, but it was of no use. I tried to fix this as well by pulling more professional photos of the Weitz that were on Google, but I believe the building is just too big to produce any sort of promising results.

This is what I was able to produce. I don’t quite understand what’s even going on here. If possible, I’d like to redo this lab and pick a building that isn’t so huge, so I can make a better (actually visible) model. I think attempting to build a model compared to simply viewing one through photographs can be a big jump. It’s easy to forget the number of details that go into the accuracy in 3D design of a building. With my pictures, trees, and lack of being able to take pictures from a distance definitely impacted the quality of my photos, so that is something I’d go back and do differently. Engaging with the built environment was definitely interesting, but I don’t think it swayed me towards this area of creativity. My lack of familiarity with using technology in this way was definitely a drawback back but I think with time I could become more comfortable and build something better. Hopefully, you have some grace when looking at this lab, and I apologize, haha.

  1. I chose one of the townhouses for my assignment, yet I still found it arduous. I really can’t imagine having to model the whole Weitz, and I am not surprised you found it challenging. I appreciate that even though you failed, you still talked about your process and experience. I think one aspect of this course I enjoy is the ability to fail and learn from it. We are all learning new tools, and we will inevitably fail sometimes.

  2. The program seems to have its limits. The Weitz being so huge means it makes sense for it not to map in the application, but it also must be annoying. I do wonder if the glass made things worse. The reflection may have confused the program. It was a good attempt and I am glad you were still able to talk about your experience!

  3. I am impressed with the fact that you even attempted to model such a large building! I can imagine that in order to produce a worthwhile model, you might have to take hundreds of photos! Even though you weren’t able to render a model, I agree that perhaps trying again with a smaller building would be an easier undertaking.
