Team Charter

Group Member: Richy Jing, Aiden Guan, Evelyn Xie, Rui Shen

Culture

  • We want a team culture that feels easy and supportive: we share the same goals, respect each other’s time and ideas, and keep a genuinely curious vibe as we explore digital mapping together.
  • We will use group chats to keep everyone in the loop, questions, quick updates, and life updates are all welcomed in the chat.
  • When we collaborate, we will keep the communication straightforward. We will show our respect to other people by listening first, asking good questions, and actually responding to each other’s points
  • We each take responsibility for our tasks, show up prepared, and stay active throughout the week, not just at meeting time
  • We will also keep a positive tone of voice, celebrate any progress, and be honest with blockers encountered in our project.

Workflows

We agree on the following principles to create a productive, supportive working environment:

  • We will set a concrete weekly schedule with specific meeting times to review each member’s progress on assigned tasks.
  • In every meeting, members will not only advance their own work but also brainstorm together, answer one another’s questions, and engage in thoughtful discussion.
  • While we’ll maintain a clear schedule, we will adjust the calendar as needed to accommodate upcoming exams, personal commitments, or other conflicts.
  • We will reserve time each meeting to socialize and share the fun things happening in our lives.

Responsibility

We have identified all the tasks essential to completing the project and will divide responsibilities based on the list below.

First, we will read and annotate the relevant books written by Hanson and the Sichuan Project created by previous Carleton students, which serve as valuable data and references for our work.

Second, one of our team members will be responsible for sending out calendar invites and reminders for meetings to facilitate group discussions.

Third, we will have one team member working on designing the layout of the webpages, which include the about, sources, and presentation pages for our project.

Fourth, one team member will be responsible for taking notes during each meeting and circulating a brief summary afterward to ensure all members stay aligned on the project’s progress.

Lastly, we will conduct a detailed examination and analysis of the textual and visual materials for our project. This task has been divided into four specific subcomponents.

  • We will digitally map the key locations from Hanson’s time in China, marking sites where he lived and tracing the route of his travels.
  • Hanson’s stay in China can be divided into four main periods: Beiping (北平), Japanese-occupied areas (日占区), Guerrilla zones (游击队), and Nationalist-controlled areas (国统区).
  • For Beiping and Nationalist-controlled areas, the map will include textual descriptions and introductions based on his own accounts in the book.
  • For Japanese-occupied and Guerrilla areas, the map will include both textual narratives and related historical photographs, showing Hanson’s interactions with CCP guerrilla leaders and depicting the daily struggles and resilience of Chinese people living under occupation.

Evelyn:

I am responsible for Webpage design, such as the appearance, the about page, and the sources page.

I’ll read the chapters about Japanese-occupied areas (日占区), extract texts, and match corresponding photos to make a page.

Rui:

I’ll read Hanson’s book, check the Sichuan project and make annotations for them.

I’m in charge of the part of journey in Nationalist-controlled areas (国统区). That process includes cleaning data on that specific location and matching it with the events recorded in the book.

Richy:

I’ll read the books written by Hanson and list the events that need to be included in our project, then I’ll clean the data that especially focus on the journey in the Beiping(北平) area. Also, I will call the meetings for the group.

Aiden:

Guerrilla zones – I will read the relevant chapters of Hanson’s book to reconstruct his experiences in the guerrilla zones of China. I will map the counties, cities, and regions where he encountered CCP guerrilla units and met with their leaders. I will also consult the Carleton digital archive for photographs related to these episodes and embed selected, captioned images, with citations, into the digital map.

Taking notes for meetings – I will take notes at every meeting to document key discussions, decisions, and action items related to project progress. After each meeting, I will send my team members brief summary notes, including agreements reached, responsibilities, and deadlines, to ensure everyone in the team stays on the same page.
