Mapping Memories of Carleton – Final Project Data Visualization

Our project is Mapping Memories of Carleton. We are making Story Maps that will be embedded into our website. There is also an additional component of having 3D models of our selected objects. These objects that are modeled have significant value and a theme surrounding them. Of the 8 total objects, each group member selected 2 of them. Below are some of the data visualizations we have so far.

Ian went on location and started taking a lot of pictures to scan them with Agisoft Metashape Pro and turned them into 3D models available on Sketchfab, which can be embedded into our site. The Story Maps have pictures of the objects, with our site showing all the models.

The models were cleaned up and prepared using the techniques we learned in class for Metashape Pro. It is important to us that they turn out as best as possible so that we can stand out among the groups that are doing and have done 3D modeling in the past.

The data visualizations are important to include. While people at Carleton can access (most) items that have been modeled, it is harder for people outside of Carleton or off campus to see them. This would include items that don’t have pictures of them in the Carleton site (like the Obituary) or other items that are hard to find information without already knowing of the object’s existence.

  1. Nice job with the data visualization! It would be great to see your Pecha Kucha presentation on this. Your 3d models are impressive and seem as if you put a lot of time into making them as accurate as possible. Metashape Pro is a great software to use, so keep up the good work!

  2. I really enjoyed reading your final project post. Your approach to gathering and visualizing personal campus stories turned a familiar place into something fresh and interesting. I loved how your data visualization gives space to different voices and experiences on campus — it makes the map feel more alive and meaningful. Your writing was clear and the graphics pulled everything together in a way that’s easy to explore. Great job!
